SHIFTSPIN started back in 2002, as an in-house solution to the stress of building a schedule for multiple part-time employees in the restaurant/hospitality industry. I was still in college at Texas A&M University, working two part-time jobs: waiting tables at a chain restaurant and programming for a department on campus. As I took on more responsibility at the restaurant, I was tasked with creating the employee schedule. I collected a stack of paper schedule requests and got to work. Several hours later, I finally had a working schedule. I made copies, distributed it to the employees, and then spent the next two weeks fielding phone calls and schedule change requests, just to go through the same exercise again. There had to be a better way.

At the same time, my other job had me managing registration for a large upcoming symposium. After creating an online method for collecting registrant information, I decided to apply that process to building the schedule for the restaurant.
